Jessica Christy - Workshops, Presentation, and Printmaking

NOTSTOCK is thrilled to have Jessica Christy as one of its guest artists. Jessica is a native North Dakotan, receiving her MFA from the University of North Dakota. Jessica has shown her work extensively both regionally and nationally, earning numerous awards. Working mainly in lithography, she is proudly venturing into the world of silkscreen printing.

Artist Statement: Coexistence of the indigenous and non-indigenous has been grounds for scenarios played out in everything from politics to Hollywood. While the historic indigenous tendency is to live tradition, the non-indigenous inclination is to be actively contemporary. This contemporary - in the American sense - is a life of popular culture and living the now. My work explores the juxtaposition of these two cultural conditions.

Jesisca will give a presentation of her work on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in Aleshire Theatre, Hartnett Hall.

Jessica will also screen print live Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Beaver Dam in the Student Center, and hold 90-minute screen-printing workshops on Thursday and Friday, Sept 12-13, at 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Her work will be on display at 62 Doors Gallery & Studios, downtown Minot, where the NOTSTOCK closing reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.

This project is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Dancing, Dazzling Beads

MSU will host the Dancing, Dazzling Beads exhibit during NOTSTOCK, on loan from the North Dakota Museum of Art. The exhibit will be in the Missouri Room on the third floor of the Student Center September 12 & 13 from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and September 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the Minot State University campus.

Dancing Dazzling Beads consists of work by today’s leading contemporary beaders from across the United States and Canada. It is a rich, vibrant, and fun exhibition for the whole community. Visitors will be treated to both wall and floor pieces, and contemporary and work based in bead history. The history of beads is a fascinating history. Beads have been traded around the world for centuries. When White traders moved into the American West, they brought beads along, stashed away to be traded for pelts. Victorian women and folk artists always beaded but it wasn’t until the last few decades contemporary Western artists turned to beads. They recognized that through accumulation, beads and more beads could be amassed into works of art, making whole galleries dance with reflected light.

NOTSTOCK Favorite: DIY Screen-Printing

Daily do-it-yourself screen-printing Thursday and Friday, Sept. 12-13, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 14, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Student Center Beaver Dam.

Visitors can choose a NOTSTOCK design and create their own screen-printed item. Participants are encouraged to bring their own T-shirt, hoodie, tote bag or other item to be printed or buy them for $5 at the event.

PotStock will happen outside the Student Center in the picnic commons on Thursday and Friday, September 12-13, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Join guest ceramicists, Sean Scott and Kendra Rodgers, as well as MSU ceramics faculty and students as they give ceramics demonstrations and raku firings. Try your hand at the potter's wheel, glaze a pot, or just watch and learn.
