Notstock 2013: Adventures in Design Podcast

MSU NOTSOCK guests Mark Brickey, Billy Baumann, and James Flames are all hosts of a popular podcast called Adventures in DesignAdventures in Design is a podcast about the culture in and around design and illustration. The three did a live recording of the podcast on the campus of MSU where they interviewed NOTSTOCK co-organizers, Laurie Geller and Bill Harbort, and MSU alumni and 62 Doors Gallery & Studios artists, Dan and Alyssa Sharbono. Wordstock 2013

Sam Cook, a National Poetry Slam Champion and founder of Button Poetry, was the guest for this year's WordStock. WordStock events included a performance by Cook for a full house in Aleshire Theatre, a Poetry Workshop where he spoke to aspiring writers about bringing their work from the page to the stage, and emceed Slam in the Dam, an exciting poetry slam competition located in the MSU Beaver Dam.

Notstock 2013: Screen Printing Workshops with Jessica Christy

This year at NOTSTOCK, North Dakota guest Jessica Christy lead 90-minute silk screen printing workshops on campus. Participants had a blast creating their own multi-color prints and even got to take them home.




Notstock 2013: Instant Theatre Improv

This workshop, lead by MSU faculty and students, was the perfect opportunity for students to learn improv tools and techniques in our very own Theatre Department.      






Potstock 2013

Students of all ages joined guest ceramicists, Sean Scott and Kendra Rodgers, as well as MSU ceramics faculty and students as they gave ceramics demonstrations and raku firings. Participants got to try their hands at the potter's wheel, some glazed pots, and some just watched and learned.







Notstock 2013: Dazzling, Dancing Beads Art Exhibit

MSU hosted the "Dancing, Dazzling Beads" exhibit this year at NOTSTOCK, on loan from the North Dakota Museum of Art in Grand Forks, North Dakota.  The exhibit consisted of work from today’s leading contemporary beaders from across the United States and Canada. It was a rich, vibrant, and fun exhibition for the whole community!




Notstock 2013: Live Screen Printing and Music in the Beaver Dam

In the Beaver Dam, students got to participate in DIY Screen Printing with local artist community 62 Doors.  Visitors could choose a NOTSTOCK design and create their own screen-printed t-shirt, hoodie, tote bag, etc.  Meanwhile our screen printing guests-- Jessica Christy, James Flames, Mark Brickey, and Billy Bauman-- were live screen printing their own editions of prints while local bands provided musical entertainment.

Adventures in Design Podcast at NOTSTOCK

Adventures in Design is a podcast about the culture in and around design and illustration. Founded in 2012 by Billy Baumann of Delicious Design League and Mark Brickey of Hero Design, the podcast has gained popularity and a loyal following with over 100,000 downloads from iTunes. In addition to Mark and Billy, Adventures in Design includes James Flames, who also hosts and assists with production and technical aspects of the podcast.

James Flames

Introducing Mark Brickey of Hero Design

NOTSTOCK is head-over-heels to have Mark Brickey of Hero Design as its guest. Hero is a multidisciplinary design studio dedicated to producing hand-crafted illustration and design, run by Long Beach, CA-based husband and wife team, Beth Manos and Mark Brickey. Formed in 2003, Hero focuses primarily on design and illustration for the music industry and c

Hero’s innovative screen prints have been featured in magazines such as HOW, Print, and SPIN, and design publications including Gigposters Volume 1: Rock Show Art of the 21st Century (Quirk Books), 1000 Garment Graphics (Rockport Publishers), and Naive: Modernism and Folklore in Contemporary Graphic Design (Gestalten Verlag). Their work has been exhibited in various museums and galleries including Museum of Design Atlanta, Gallery 1988 (LA), and Crewest Gallery (LA).

Mark will give a presentation of his work on Friday (Sept. 13) at noon in Aleshire Theatre, Hartnett Hall.

Mark will also screen print live all day Thursday through Saturday (Sept. 12-14) in the Beaver Dam in the Student Center.

His work will be for sale at the event and on display at 62 Doors Gallery & Studios, downtown Minot, where the NOTSTOCK closing reception will be held Saturday (Sept. 14) at 7 p.m.

James Flames at NOTSTOCK

NOTSTOCK is stoked to have James Flames as its guest. James works and resides within the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC, but was born and bred in Brooklyn, NY. His artwork has been featured in galleries near and far — from London to L.A., NY to NC. He creates rock posters for some of the top touring bands out on the road today — posters which he screen prints by hand in his little studio tucked away in the woods.

James will give a presentation of his work on Friday (Sept. 13) at 9 a.m. in Aleshire Theatre, Hartnett Hall.
